Building the Future of Medicine: Cannon & Wendt’s Award-Winning Contribution to Mayo Clinic’s IERB
July 28, 2025 – At Cannon & Wendt, we believe in building projects that strengthen our community and push industries forward. As we celebrate our 80th year of service in Arizona, we are incredibly proud to spotlight a project that perfectly embodies our core values of Company, Client, and Community: the Mayo Clinic Integrated Education and Research Building (IERB) in Phoenix.
This state-of-the-art facility has already gained significant recognition, earning the title of Higher Education Project of the Year from the prestigious RED Awards. This accolade is a testament to the vision of Mayo Clinic, the expert management of our partners at DPR Construction, and the skill and dedication of the entire Cannon & Wendt team.
A Landmark Project for a Leader in Healthcare
The new 150,000-square-foot Integrated Education and Research Building is a cornerstone of Mayo Clinic’s “Arizona. Bold. Forward.” expansion. It was designed to be a hub of innovation, uniting the next generation of healthcare professionals with leading researchers to accelerate medical discovery.
The facility is now home to five schools within the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Sciences and features over twenty advanced biomedical and translational research labs. It’s a place where education, research, and patient care seamlessly merge, creating a powerful environment for developing the healthcare solutions of tomorrow.
Cannon & Wendt’s Critical Role
Cannon & Wendt was selected alongside our partners at DPR Construction to provide a full spectrum of electrical services, beginning with the crucial preconstruction and design phases. Our involvement from the ground up ensured that the complex electrical needs of this sophisticated facility were meticulously planned and executed.
The project, which ran from June 2022 through the summer of 2024, required a deep understanding of the exacting standards of medical and research environments. Our team was responsible for installing the complex power, lighting, and low-voltage systems essential for everything from advanced research laboratories to immersive digital classrooms and medical simulation suites.
We extend a special thanks to our key team members who guided this project to success:
- Bryce Godard, whose expertise was invaluable during the preconstruction phase.
- Jeff Larsh and Aaron Knudsen, who expertly managed the project from its first day on site to its successful completion.
Of course, their leadership was supported by the tireless efforts of every Cannon & Wendt craftsperson, project manager, and support staff member who touched this project. It is your commitment to quality and safety that turns ambitious blueprints into award-winning realities.
Building on a Legacy of Excellence
The successful completion and recognition of the Mayo Clinic IERB project is a powerful example of our company’s three C’s in action. We delivered an exceptional result for our Client, worked collaboratively as a Company, and contributed to a vital Community asset that will advance healthcare in Arizona for decades to come.
As we celebrate our 80th anniversary, projects like the IERB energize us for the future. They reinforce our longstanding commitment to quality and our readiness to take on the most complex and critical projects. We are proud of this achievement and look forward to continuing our work with valued partners like DPR and Mayo Clinic to build a better future for Arizona.
